Did you know that the US is still at war with Korea, Germany, Japan, Bosnia and Kosovo? Based on “Hardball” host Chris Matthews’ recent claims, we are still at war with those countries and will be until our troops leave their soil. (h/t Weasel Zippers)

On his November 28 show (transcript here), MSNBC’s Matthews discussed Iraq with Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, wondering when “will we be able to come home.” In the process, the former Carter speechwriter said, “If we can’t ever come home, we can’t ever say we won.”

Silly me, I thought WWII, the Korean War, the Bosnian War and the Kosovo War were over. I guess the US troops still stationed in those countries prove otherwise (bold mine throughout):

Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc., said the 12-week-long strike she recently endured convinced her to leave the industry and seek a career in nursing. She will begin school in September, while continuing to work for American Axle to provide health care for her five children, the youngest of whom is 2.

“It’s very disappointing,” she said about the walkout. “I’m ready to move on.”

Economist Dana Johnson said he thinks Michigan’s economy will recover more slowly than the rest of the country.

“I’ve always thought that 2009 would be another year of contraction for the Michigan economy. GM and Ford’s announcement reinforce the view that that will be a difficult year,” he said.

Mount Maunganui Fire Service Station Officer Nigel Liddicoat said the resident was alerted to the fire when his smoke alarm activated.

The man left the property but then went back in to try and extinguish the fire with a garden hose, Liddicoat said. It was this effort to save his home that left him with burns.

Three fire appliances from Tauranga and Mount Maunganui took 20 minutes to get the blaze under control. Mr Liddicoat said the house was destroyed.

“It’s pretty much gutted … the roof’s caved in, severe damage right through,” he said.

“There are large gaping holes in the floor and the roof’s collapsed,” he added.

Fire safety officer Ken McKeagg is investigating the cause of the fire.

“We’ve got some ideas but it’s only speculation at the moment based on what the occupant has told other people,” he said of the likely cause. more

My own take, without any supporting statistics, is that development has come slow to Portland.

That is good - but PDC is doing its best to speed that development, that is bad.

But, there is another side - isn’t there? Wouldn’t most consumers agree that the profit margin be as small as possible. I think most believe that businesses should make a profit - it is the profit margin that becomes the issue.

Profit margin and volume is the big retailers approach. Government did (and has done) nothing to stop this approach. The fact that the small grocery store could not complete on volume was not an issue.

This was and is your capitalism economics at its best and worst. It serves the conservatives and liberals alike.

Capitalism as a concept cares little about the destruction it imposes - it cares only about the profit. more
